Power outage at the movies!

**Posting Friday on Saturday**

Hurray for Friday, my favorite day of the week πŸ™‚ There’s nothing better than knowing that by Friday evening you have absolutely no tedious commitments for more than 48 hours!

BREAKFAST

I’m on an egg kick lately – for some reason I’m starting to like the savory flavor in the morning. That, combined with the fact that I haven’t made a trip to the grocery store lately, helps to explain my unchanging breakfast habits these past few days! I started out with the usual mix of egg whites, goat cheese and feta.

I mixed it up a little by also including a bowl of Nature’s Path Rice Puffs.

I topped the puffs with about 2 tbsp. of Trader Joe’s Anti-OXidant trail mix. I also used unsweetened chocolate almond milk.

And some Coffee Cocoa minus the cocoa again. The reason for this is because I just realized that the hot chocolate I’ve been using has sucralose in it, among a bunch of other random ingredients that I just don’t think I want to be drinking every day! I’m planning a trip to Whole Foods to see what else I can come up with. Life is short. Stay awake for it. Hehe;)

MORNING SNACK

Here’s some exciting news – a new snack bar to report!! It’s called Mrs. May’s Naturals Trio. My mom picked up a box for me from Costco when she was here. They are vegan, kosher and free of gluten, dairy, wheat and GMO. It sounded good to me!! I tried the strawberry flavor first.

The reason (I’m guessing) it’s called Trio is because there are three types of nuts, three types of seeds and three types of fruit in each bar. The ingredients in this one are: CASHEWS, ALMONDS, PISTACHIOS, STRAWBERRIES, SESAME SEEDS, SUNFLOWER SEEDS, PUMPKIN SEEDS, DATES, RAISINS, RICE MALT, NATURAL FLAVORS, CANE JUICE, SEA SALT. Here’s what it looks like out of the wrapper:

Personally I think it looks pretty yummy – and it WAS! It was crunchy without being too hard to chew, salty from the nuts and seeds and sweet from the fruit. The perfect blend of flavors! It’s definitely a bigger bar than I’m used to as a snack: 230 calories, 16g fat (healthy fat from the nuts and seeds), 20g carbohydrates – including 3g fiber and 8g sugar – and 6g protein. I totally thought it was worth it though, because it kept me full for a really long time! Thanks for the recommendation, MomπŸ™‚

LUNCH

I met up with Bobby for lunch at Corner Bakery, a restaurant with several locations in Chicago that I’ve mentioned before. I decided to stick with the “trio” theme and get their Trio Salad, where you can choose three mini salads off of their overall list. I went with two fruit salads and one Asian salad.

The Asian salad had grape tomatoes, asparagus, edamame, cucumber and carrots. It came with a ginger dressing – which tasted alright. I would’ve liked the vegetables by themselves more!

The fruit salad came with melon, apples, pears, watermelon and purple grapes. No complaints there!

AFTERNOON SNACK

This afternoon I was really dragging so I allowed myself to have another organic skim mocha from Hannah’s Bretzel. I just love the foamy top!

DINNER

After a long day at the office (haha), Bobby and I decided to break out a bottle of wine. My mom suggested several different kinds while she was here. Today we opened a bottle of Riesling called Polka Dot.

Here’s my 5 oz. pour – this tasted great. It was very fruity and sweet!

The wine went great with dinner, which was a mix of chicken breast seasoned with taco spices, black beans and diced tomatoes.

I definitely had more black beans, but the chicken was really filling!

DESSERT

After dinner, Bobby and I had plans to go see the movie Hancock. We didn’t want to see The Dark Knight simply because we like to wait until it’s not quite so busy. But when we got to the theater, we saw a huge crowd outside and realized the power was out! There were movie theater officials outside the door who said they didn’t expect it to be back on before the night was over. We will still be able to see the movie with the tickets we bought, but it was kind of a bummer!

So instead, we went to a local ice cream shop and got some Edy’s strawberry frozen yogurt to share. Not a bad consolation prize!

Then we went back to my apartment and finished the first season of Lost, which is SO ADDICTING by the way! Now we have to find out a way to get our hands on the other seasons – and FAST!

A great way to kick off the weekend, for sure. I hope you all have some exciting things planned as well. I’m off to hit up the G-store (groceries!) and read some more blogs – it’s a rainy day here, so unfortunately any plans to go outdoors will have to wait!

  1. “Life is short. Stay awake for it.” LOVE IT!!!

I remember Em from “Gliding Calm” doing a product review for the Trio bars – haven’t seen them around here though!!

Ahh, that’s too bad about the power going out at the movies, and that the movie itself was a bummer :0(

Sounds like your weekend is off to a great start!! Hope the rest goes just as well :0)

  2. you’d never expect a power outage at a movie theater! but i bet i can beat that!

when i used to work at a rocky mountain at an outside mall we had a theater where someone ran in with BEAR MASE, and out past my store to the parking structure! they had to evacuate the whole place! horrible at the time because i couldn’t breath but funny now because, omg, who does that with BEAR MASE! Geez!

but your fro-yo looks sooooooooooooo good. hope your day inside because of lousy weather turns out nice! weekends are time to relax from work! yay!

  3. I’ve been to the Corner Bakery a few times while in Chicago and love it. They have this great swiss oatmeal that I’m pretty sure is filled with way too many calories, but it’s delicious. πŸ™‚

    Love the coffee cup motto!

  4. I’m curious what form of egg whites you use? Do you separate real eggs, buy liquid egg beaters egg whites, or use powered egg whites?

I love the liquid egg beaters egg whites but my local grocery store stopped carrying them so I’d to hear what you do.

Blog looks great – I’m trying to acquire a healthier attitude towards food and seeing your style really helps.

  5. Thanks for adding me to your blogroll! I added you to mine, too =]

That Trio bar looks really good! I’ve heard a lot of bloggers post about healthy, vegan goodies they’ve discovered at Costco. I’m a member…guess I’ll just have to really look around next time I’m there.

  6. that bar looks really good, i’ll have to keep my eye out for it.

i just love your mug and all of your bowls/dishes. I always say that using nice plates with a placemat, etc. makes the whole eating experience so much more pleasurable. That’s one thing I really like about blogging—i’ve been trying to make my meals prettier. One of my biggest problems is eating too fast and almost like not even realizing I’m eating by not focusing on the colors, smells, etc. I’m working on it though!

It may seem funny at first, but one thing you should try is taking a few bites with your eyes closed. You can really focus on the tastes and textures of your food that way.

I picked up some your recommendations at TJ’s today that I can’t wait to try! I got the mini-meringues and some trail mix. I’m so excited!

Sorry this is the longest post in the history of blogworld, but one last thing—I LOVE that picture of the eiffel tower in the background of the wine picture. Where did you get it? I’m obsessed with black and white photography, I think it’s so gorgeous, and Paris is my favorite place on earth, so that picture really makes me happy : )

I hope you have a fantastic weekend and enjoy grocery shopping!

    Ok, done.

  7. Mmm, your froyo totally put me in the mood, Jenn! I’m gettin my paws on some soft-serve tonight! I always have so much trouble deciding what flavor to get, though!!! :- Ohh, woe is me πŸ˜‰

And enjoy your weekend! I looove weekends and this one couldn’t have come at a better time! -PS- POST YOUR GROCERY PICS FOR US!!! πŸ™‚

    Kelly T ~
Haha, birdseed bars is actually pretty accurate!

Foodie ~ I love the motto too – one of my favorite’s for sure!

Ellen ~ I use the egg beater egg whites – the easiest way! I’m sorry that they have stopped carrying it near you. That has happened to me with other products, and I found the best way to get it back was to talk to someone with the store, and get some of your friends to call in to so it generates as much interest as possible. Good luck! And thanks for reading πŸ™‚

Katie ~ I could get lost in Costco, I love it so much!

Sarah ~ See my comment on your blog re: the bowl/plate/pretty pictures! As for the picture of Paris, that one is actually my roommates’. But we have a whole collection and I actually found mine at a campus poster sale at my school that they hold every fall. I think there are also some good ones at allposters.com – I love Paris, too!

Julz ~ I hope you got that soft-serve!! Sorry I missed out on the grocery pic, but I promise I will have one up next time! Have a great Sunday!
