Eating with half of my tastebuds.

I just have to say that you really don’t realize how truly wonderful the taste of food is until you can only taste it with one side of your mouth! I went to the dentist this morning for a filling. Yes, technically I had a cavity (gasp!), but the dentist assured me that it did NOT have anything to do with my hygiene (which is absolutely stellar, in case you were wondering) – it’s just a matter of uncontrollable factors that he tried to explain but I didn’t really understand because apparently dentists speak an entirely different language. Something about how the sealants that were put on to protect my teeth when I was little were starting to wear away and inviting all sorts of foodie goodies in – ugh!

So right now half of my mouth is numb. It’s a lovely feeling, not being able to feel half of my face 😉 But eventually the numbness will go away and give way to pain, so I’m going to stick with the numbness for right now.

On my way home from the dentist, I stopped at Whole Foods because frankly, I deserved it after that!

I picked up a new flavor of Bear Naked granola after hearing about it over at The Broccoli Hut. I also got some whipped cottage cheese, carrots (to try with PB a la Miss Gliding Calm), green and purple grapes, cubed tofu, three new flavors of LARABAR, Silk soy creamer, and soy pudding (for some baking I will be doing this weekend!)

When I came home, I knew I needed to make something creamy for breakfast in order to avoid biting my tongue or chewing the wrong way. So I made something I haven’t featured on the blog for WAY too long: stove-top oatmeal!!

Wow. I have really missed my oatmeal! I forgot how creamy and voluminous stove-top oats are – I need to start making them more often again! Today’s combination:

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 sliced banana
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
  • 1 tbsp. ground flax
  • 1 tbsp. Maranatha creamy PB to my spoon

~*~

It was my first time adding whey protein powder to my oatmeal. Unfortunately, eating with only half of my mouth made it so I couldn’t really taste it and tell you what it was like 🙁 But from what I COULD taste, it seemed pretty good! I really like how it’s an easy way to get in extra protein and create a more balanced meal, since oatmeal tends to be very carb-heavy. I expect this oatmeal to keep me fueled through my workout this afternoon!

Side note: It was absolutely HILARIOUS eating this oatmeal! I felt my chin after about three bites and there was oatmeal dribbling down everywhere! I felt like I was feeding a baby! Eventually, I got up and looked in the mirror while I was eating because it was too much of a mess

After finishing the oatmeal – which took an extra long time because of my inability to eat without spilling – I tried another challenge: drinking Coffee Cocoa!

I actually was able to drink it without spilling! Aren’t you proud? 😉 And of course I had to feature my lovely Caribou Coffee mug because of it features my favorite slogan!

Now I’m watching some women’s volleyball. I love watching these ladies because not only are they AMAZING athletes…they are also RIPPED! They are giving me the motivation I need for a hard workout!

It’s the weekend! I’m loving it! Time is such a beautiful thing 🙂

  1. Oh gosh, I’m sorry about your cavity!

I was watching women’s volley as I ran on the treadmill today, it definitely motivated me!

  2. Aw, sorry about the cavity! On a happier note, I love the side note. I have trouble feeding myself sometimes too 😉 and it’s usually when I’m eating alone so I’m the only one to laugh at me. Enjoy the games!

  3. i was watching the volleyball too!! i was disappointed that the japanese team lost, obviously, but i’m sure you were happy 😀 it’s so exciting to watch though, and i just admire the teamwork so much.

i hope the numbness goes away soon and the pain doesn’t come too badly!! i’m actually scarily accident-prone when it comes to my teeth – i had four of the front ones fall out when i was about one and a bit years old from falling down the stairs and had to wear fake teeth all through nursery/pre school :p i loved it haha! and two more times i fell directly on my mouth (my hands never seem to support me…) and so i was very used to the dentist, and that numb feeling!

  4. Ahh, hang in there!! I do hope that your entire mouth will be able to enjoy the sensation of eating food soon 🙂

LARABARS!!! Let me know what you think of the flavors that you haven’t had yet 🙂

  5. Thanks!

I was watching the Olympics, too, but I missed the women’s volleyball. I really want to catch women’s cycling tomorrow because I love cycling myself.

  6. aww sorry about your tooth : ( I remember once I had to get a tooth pulled so I needed tons of novicaine. i couldn’t feel half my face and definitely spilled all over myself while eating!

    hopefully you feel better soon!

and i’m excited for your baking adventures!!

  7. i’m so jealous that you got the new larabars! they are still m.i.a from my whole foods and when i ask if they are getting them soon, the poor employees just stare at me blankly with stars in their eyes, dumbfounded that such delicacies could actually be in existence. naive things, they’re clearly not in the blog circuit.

  8. Your oatmeal = major yummy looking!! Oh, and dentists do speak in another language. I work at a dental-related non-profit, and sometimes I don’t know how I get through the day 🙂

  9. Boo, hope your taste buds are back and better than ever! Those athletes are good motivation… I did a few extra sit ups after watching the ceremonies 😉

  10. Nicole ~ Thanks 🙁 I wish it still didn’t hurt, darn it!

Danielle ~ Haha! Who knew it could be so difficult, right?

mi ~ I agree – the teamwork is just incredible. And yikes! Those are some scary teeth stories you have! Glad you’re ok now 🙂

    VeggieGirl ~
I’ll make sure to do a full review for you!

Katie ~ Cycling is awesome. I will pretty much watch anything because it’s all so enthralling!

Sarah ~ Thanks! Yeah, I had eight teeth pulled, so I totally know what you’re talking about – ugh!

Leigh ~ Haha, clearly they are not foodies or part of the blog circuit – what are they THINKING? Don’t they know that’s just not living?! 😉

Rose ~ Thank you! And I laughed out loud at your comment about the language barrier 🙂

All Vegged Out ~ Heck yes! I definitely worked out harder than I have in a long time today. I wish the Olympics were on all the time!
